Included in the 736 names on the new war memorial are two local men who paid the ultimate sacrifice serving in Afghanistan.

Marine Jonathan ‘Dutchy’ Holland was killed on active service in the Sangin Valley in February 2007, whilst Warrant Officer David Markland was killed in Nad-e-Ali in February 2010.

As at 24th September 2012, a total of 433 British forces personnel or MOD civilians have died while serving in Afghanistan since the start of operations in October 2001.

Of those, 390 were killed as a result of hostile action.
