A team of specialist Stonemasons were on site early this morning, starting to put in place all the Portland Limestone panels with the 736 names of the fallen.
The main contractors, Landscape Engineering Ltd are well advanced with their work.
Having already completed the low wall containing conflict stones, they have finished the viewing platform at the back of the site and started with the random stone walls either side of the the main memorial.
The ‘viewing platform’ is for use by those leading Acts of Remembrance at the memorial during the year, in particular on Remembrance Sunday, Holocaust Day and a ceremony commemorating the fallen of the Falklands conflict.
A 1.2 metre high balustrade, embellished with the Chorley coat of arms, will shortly be installed around the 2m x 1m platform.
Everything is on schedule and the stonemasons will be working on the site on Saturday to get ahead of schedule, just in case the inclement weather returns. Work should be completed in time for Remembrance Sunday.
Commenting on progress to date, Chorley Remembers Chairman Lindsay Hoyle MP said: “I am really impressed with what is happening on the site. When finished, it will be a credit to Chorley, finally recognising the men whose names are carved with pride on their home town memorial.”
Lindsay also paid tribute to the work of Chorley Remembers Secretary Steve Williams, who is managing this element of the project: “We are lucky to have someone as dedicated as Steve. He has worked tirelessly on the project, like he did with the Chorley Pals Memorial back in 2010.”
