Lindsay Hoyle, the MP for Chorley and Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons will be unveiling two cannons in the courtyard of the Coach House, Astley Hall, Chorley at 12 noon on Friday 29th August.
The cannons were cast in 1812 and were presented to the Royal Ordnance Factory at Euxton near Chorley in 1964 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the factory officially opening in 1939 [pictured above].
They stood for many years in front of the HQ building on Euxton Lane, which is now used by Runshaw College.
When the building was sold and the site decommissioned over a decade ago, the cannons were removed to another ROF site in South Wales and stored away.
Lindsay Hoyle negotiated with the owners BAE Systems for the return of the cannons to Chorley, and they were recently acquired by the Chorley Remembers project, of which Lindsay Hoyle is the Chairman.
They will be on permanent display outside the Coach House on the Astley Hall site, which also hosts the Chorley Remembers ‘Remembrance Experience’ exhibition.
