Despite the rain, work started on the War Memorial site in Astley Park today.
Contractors, Landscape Engineering Limited (who recently completed improvements to the Chorley Pals Memorial site on the Flat Iron) were on-site, along with specialist stonemason Martin Rigby (who worked on the Chorley Pals Memorial back in 2010).
Fences went up to secure the site and Martin carefully started removing the numerous ‘conflict stones’, ready for relocating in a new wall a few yards away.
A total of 741 names will go on 13 panels on a new low screen wall at the back of the Celtic cross, unveiled back in May 1924.
Work is expected to be completed by the 5th November, in time for Remembrance Sunday on the 11th.
Updates will appear here on a regular basis.
