Chorley War Memorial

Chorley War Memorial

The original civic war memorial in Astley Park was erected and unveiled by the Council in May 1924.

After the unveiling of the Chorley Pals Memorial in February 2010, local people began contacting the town’s Member of Parliament, Lindsay Hoyle, asking if something could be done to add the names of the fallen from Chorley around the war memorial in Astley Park.

Following extensive work by members of the Chorley branch of the Lancashire Family History Society, as well appeals in the media and in local Libraries, 738 names were identified to go on to 13 limestone panels at the back of the existing memorial. The redeveloped memorial site and new wall was finished on Friday, 9th November 2012 - just in time for Remembrance Sunday two days later.
